Headaches are one of the most common complaints that people face, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Whether it's a dull ache or a pounding migraine, the impact can range from mildly annoying to completely debilitating. For many, traditional pain relief methods like over-the-counter medications, rest, and cold or warm compresses offer temporary relief. But what if there's a more lasting solution that addresses the root cause of the problem, rather than just masking the symptoms? Health professionals, such as chiropractors, can address the root cause of headaches and often help when there is musculoskeletal involvement.
Before diving into how chiropractic care helps, it's important to understand the various types of headaches. The international classification of headaches has 14 different classifications with many subsections under each classification, this equates to over 300 different types of headaches. However, whilst there are many kinds, the most common include:
Regardless of the type, the key to effective treatment is understanding the underlying causes. This is where chiropractic care can make a significant difference.
Chiropractic care focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal issues, especially those related to the spine. It's a non-invasive treatment that aims to restore balance to the body, alleviate pain, and improve overall function. When it comes to headaches, chiropractic adjustments can address the root causes—specifically issues with the spine, neck, and posture—that may be contributing to the pain. A study in 2018 by Moore et al found a large percentage of patients presenting to chiropractors were for headache management, and that the outcomes were favourable for improvement of symptoms.
One of the most common causes of tension headaches is poor posture and muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. Misalignments in the cervical spine (the neck region) can lead to increased tension, restricted movement, and nerve irritation, all of which can contribute to headache pain. Chiropractic care can help restore proper alignment and alleviate the muscle tightness and nerve irritation associated with these headaches.
While the exact cause of migraines is not fully understood, research suggests that spinal misalignments and nerve interference may contribute to the onset of some migraines. Chiropractors often treat migraine sufferers by focusing on the upper cervical spine (the top of the neck) where nerve compression may occur. Chiropractic care can help improve nervous system function and reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.
A study published by Tuchin et al in 2000 showed that spinal manipulation had a significant effect on reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. This holistic approach can be an alternative or supplement to more conventional treatments.
Cervicogenic headaches, which are headaches that originate from the neck, are another common condition treated by chiropractors. These headaches are typically caused by issues with the cervical spine, such as misalignments or muscle tightness. A chiropractor will assess the alignment of the neck, and, through gentle spinal adjustments, can help correct any abnormalities in the spine. This can significantly reduce or even eliminate the headaches caused by neck dysfunction.
Chiropractors often emphasize the importance of good posture in preventing and treating headaches. Poor posture, especially from prolonged sitting or slouching in front of computers or phones, can strain the muscles in the neck and upper back, leading to headaches. Chiropractors not only provide adjustments to alleviate pain but also offer lifestyle recommendations to improve posture, strengthen the muscles in the neck and back, and reduce overall stress on the body.
When you visit us for headaches, the first step is typically an assessment. We will ask about your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle habits. We will also perform physical tests, such as range of motion exercises, palpation, and orthopaedic and neurological tests to identify any misalignments or dysfunctions in the spine or neck.
Based on our findings, we will develop a tailored treatment plan, which may include spinal adjustments, soft tissue work, stretching exercises, and ergonomic recommendations. Many patients notice improvement after just a few sessions, although some may need ongoing treatments for optimal results.
